New Era 59Fifty: Iconic Style, Premium Price, and Mixed Results

New Era has been a leading name in headwear since its founding in 1920 by Ehrhardt Koch. Known for its iconic caps, especially the 59Fifty fitted hat, New Era has cemented its reputation in sports, fashion, and streetwear. Despite its legacy, however, the 59Fifty hat has some notable drawbacks when evaluated against Six Star Review’s criteria: Quality, Value, Price, Customer Support, Ease of Use, and Durability.

Quality: 2/6 Stars

While New Era’s 59Fifty hats maintain a strong aesthetic appeal, the quality is inconsistent. Sizing irregularities are a significant issue, with a size 7 1/4 often fitting more like a 7 1/8 or 7 3/8. Construction flaws such as off-center bills further detract from the experience. We strongly recommend trying on multiple hats in-store if possible to ensure a proper fit. For a premium-priced product, these quality inconsistencies are disappointing.

Value: 2/6 Stars

Value has declined significantly over the years. Once priced at $25, these hats now retail for over $50. While the 59Fifty remains stylish and iconic, the inflated cost—combined with inconsistent quality—leaves us rating its value as low. The shift from wool to synthetic materials should have reduced costs, but that savings has not been passed on to the consumer.

Price: 1/6 Stars

The price of the 59Fifty is one of its most significant drawbacks. At the high end of the spectrum for headwear, New Era continues to raise prices despite cutting material costs. For over $50, consumers should expect top-tier quality and service, which the 59Fifty does not consistently deliver.

Customer Support: 1/6 Stars

New Era’s customer support leaves much to be desired. Returns are cumbersome, and reaching a representative—whether via email or phone—can be frustrating. When issues arise, such as sizing discrepancies or defective products, resolution is not consumer-friendly.

Ease of Use: 3/6 Stars

Purchasing in-store is straightforward, and trying on multiple sizes can mitigate some sizing inconsistencies. However, online purchases present challenges. Without the ability to try before you buy, you’re reliant on the retailer to send the correct size—an issue exacerbated by New Era’s inconsistent sizing standards.

Durability: 5/6 Stars

The durability of the 59Fifty hat is commendable. When worn sparingly or in rotation with other caps, the hat holds up well over time. However, daily wear may reveal the limitations of its construction. Overall, the product performs as advertised in this category.

Overall Rating: 3/6 Stars

The New Era 59Fifty fitted hat remains a stylish and iconic choice but struggles with quality control, pricing, and customer support. While its durability is a bright spot, the overall value for the money is underwhelming. At Six Star Review, we give the New Era 59Fifty fitted hat 3 out of 6 stars. For those set on purchasing this cap, we recommend buying in-store and inspecting multiple hats to find the best fit and finish.

New Era’s rich history deserves respect, but the 59Fifty’s current state falls short of the standards consumers should expect at this price point.
